Celebrating Our Hispanic Culture

Celebrating Our Hispanic Culture

There’s no question that Hispanic culture has permanently woven itself into the fabric of America. The culture is broad and diverse, just consider the regions it spans worldwide. Yet, what binds us together is the language and realization that we all have more in common than not.

And that’s why we’re excited to share with you, an insider look of what that means to each of us on Hispanic Heritage Month.

A proud Hispanic, blessed with two beautiful Ecuadorian parents, who taught her the importance of their culture and traditions.

“I believe my parent’s value in speaking Spanish at home and visiting Ecuador every year at an early age made ‘mi raices’ so strong.” As a little girl, her extensive cultural upbringing also came from importance in family, values, work ethic, music, food, and parties.

Fun facts:

  • My first language is Spanish (born in NYC but raised with two immigrant parents who only spoke Spanish, which naturally became my first language)
  • My first visit to Ecuador was when I was 13 years old and the tradition was to go every year.
  • Three of my favorite Ecuadorian meals are cazuela de pescado, bolon & ceviche mixto (google it, it’s delicious).

“What I love the best of my culture besides the food is the feeling I get in my heart when surrounded with people or places from our culture. I cannot explain it, it just happens.”

Born in Puerto Rico from a Nuyorican mother and Puerto Rican father, she’s wife to a Cubano and mother to a beautiful curly-haired Latina.

“For me, being Hispanic means carrying a torch for all the family who came ahead of me and worked hard to ensure that the next generation would continue to grow stronger.”

Fun facts:

  • My fondest memories of childhood visits to Puerto Rico are evening visits to the panaderia to indulge in warm sandwiches, postres and cola champagne.
  • I finally learned to master flan this year.
  • I Love Spanish refranes (proverbs) –  for example “A caballo regalado no se le mira el colmillo” - means one should accept a gift without criticizing it.

“My Hispanic background has certainly shaped my personality. I can't stop myself from expressing the humor, warmth, and affection inherent to my culture.”

As young twentysomethings, we found ourselves starting our careers at the same organization. Our Hispanic culture created our sense of humor and devotion, which allowed us to bond immediately. Only to discover during the course of our friendship that we shared a love for celebrating life and enjoying others. And with the love of such, spawned the dream of The Bonito Box.

There is so much beauty in the world to celebrate! We are proud to share a little bit of who we are and be able to celebrate and honor it with you all.
